The Safety, Health and Environmental Awareness (SHEA) Gas course is part of the nationally recognised EUSR safety passport scheme. It has been developed in collaboration with industry experts to provide a consistent and practical approach to health, safety, and environmental awareness across the gas utility sector, in line with Health and Safety Executive (HSE) expectations.
Overview
The course comprises 9 modules—6 core modules relevant to all utilities, and 3 gas-specific modules—designed to ensure delegates understand key safety behaviours and practices before entering operational sites.
This scheme is suitable for anyone requiring access to gas industry sites, including permanent and temporary staff at all levels.
Who Is It For?
This course is ideal for:
- Operatives, supervisors, and managers working on gas networks
- New entrants or contractors needing access to gas infrastructure sites
Entry Requirements
- No formal prerequisites are required
- A good level of spoken and written English is recommended
- For renewals, the full-day or half-day format depends on current registration status
Course Duration
- Full Day (Initial training and assessment)
- Half Day renewal options available for existing SHEA holders (face-to-face, eClassroom, or eLearning)
- eLearning and remote assessment options available (subject to conditions)
Course Content
Delegates must successfully complete the following 9 modules:
SHEA Core Modules:
- Understanding Our Workplace Responsibilities
- Understanding the Effects of Our Work on the Environment
- Identifying and Controlling Risks
- Common Hazards and Controls in the Workplace
- Occupational Health Hazards
- Responding to Emergencies
Gas-Specific Modules:
7. Gas Industry Hazards and Controls
Key risks specific to gas works and how to control them safely.
8. Gas Operations and Procedures
Standard procedures, tools, and operations in a gas environment.
9. Gas Emergency Situations
How to respond to gas incidents and emergencies appropriately.
Assessment
- All modules include trainer-led delivery and assessment
- Assessment is typically multiple-choice or structured response questions
- Full completion of all 9 modules is required for certification
Certification
- Successful candidates will receive EUSR SHEA Gas registration
- Registration is valid for 5 years
- Renewal requires successful completion of updated training and assessment
