This Medium Risk course is accredited by City & Guilds and is essential for those working in a confined space where access risks are present and escape breathing apparatus must be taken in.
This is a competence based training course and will require delegates to show a good understanding of safe working practices and emergency arrangements including the use of a variety of equipment.
Candidates will be trained on how to select, use, visually inspect and maintain confined space equipment.
Course Content
The course covers:
- Health & safety legislation relevant to confined spaces
- Risk assessment and implementation of safe systems of work
- Atmospheric testing and monitoring
- Use of access and egress equipment
- Safe use of Escape Breathing Apparatus (EBA)
- Duties and responsibilities of standby personnel
- Emergency procedures, communications, and rescue protocols
- Practical entry into a confined space using appropriate PPE and EBA
Course Duration
2 Days.
Assessment
Delegates will be assessed through:
- A written test to confirm knowledge of key topics
- A practical assessment in a simulated confined space environment
- Both elements must be passed to gain certification.
Entry Requirements
- A good understanding of spoken and written English is essential
- Delegates must complete a Confined Space Medical Declaration to confirm they are medically fit for this type of work
- Delegates must be physically able to wear escape breathing apparatus and carry out practical elements of the training
PPE Requirements
All candidates must bring:
- Safety boots
- Hard hat
- Hi-vis clothing
- Safety gloves
- Impact goggles or safety glasses
- RPE (Escape Breathing Apparatus will be provided for practicals)
Certification
Upon successful completion, delegates will receive a City & Guilds 6160-09 Confined Space (Medium Risk) certificate, valid for 3 years.

CITB Employer Network Funding
Allenby Training is an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) and part of the CITB Training Provider Network (TPN).
If applicable, we recommend the following process for CITB Employer Network referrals:
- Reserve a place with us as an approved training provider.
- Email your local CITB Advisor with the full booking details.
- The CITB Advisor will submit the request to their booking team for approval.
- CITB will confirm the booking directly.
- Training will then proceed as normal.
