The NPORS N304 Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT & Genny) course is designed to ensure operators are trained in the safe and correct use of cable avoidance equipment used to detect underground utilities. Aimed at both new and existing operatives, this training is essential for reducing service strikes and ensuring compliance with industry best practice and legislation.
Delegates will gain the knowledge and practical skills to confidently detect, trace, and mark underground services using standard modes of operation, while carrying out all required safety checks and procedures.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, candidates will be able to:
- Understand the dangers of working around underground services
- Explain their legal responsibilities as an operator
- Use manufacturer’s manuals and reference legislation
- Identify equipment controls and perform pre-use checks
- Define and distinguish between different underground services
- Recognise the risks associated with underground service strikes
- Follow safe working practices and set up exclusion zones
- Perform accurate scanning and tracing using CAT & Genny in various modes
- Mark out detected services and interpret results
- Carry out safe shutdown, cleaning, and equipment storage procedures
Practical Assessment Includes
- Pre-start checks and equipment calibration
- Safe handling of the CAT & Genny
- Scanning and tracing in Passive, Radio, and Active modes
- Use of signal generator: direct connection, induction, and depth reading (if applicable)
- Marking and recording findings following manufacturer’s patterns
- Shutdown, post-use inspection, and PPE checks
All assessments are conducted in a controlled environment and follow NPORS guidelines.
Entry Requirements
A good understanding of spoken and written English
Valid photographic ID (Driving Licence or Passport)
Delegates must bring and wear full PPE:
- Hard hat
- Hi-vis clothing
- Safety gloves
- Safety boots
- Eye protection (if applicable)
Certification
- On successful completion, delegates will receive an NPORS Traditional Operator Card.
- Certification demonstrates competence and is valid for 5 years, subject to renewal.
