Construction Health and Safety Awareness (HSA)

This one day Site Safety Plus course provides general health and safety awareness for people who work, or want to work, on a construction site. The course is designed to help learners understand how to keep themselves and others safe at work, recognise hazards and risks, understand site rules and signs, and prepare for further construction health and safety training.

The course is suitable for people who are new to construction, people working towards a green CSCS card, and those whose HSA certification is more than five years old and who need to renew their certification.

The course includes discussion, pictures and signs, scenarios and real-life case studies, workbook activities and game-style activities. Learners are expected to engage with the course and complete the mandatory workbook exercises.

Course Content and Learning Outcomes

The revised HSA course is structured around five key areas:

• Module 1 – General rules, regulations and responsibilities

• Module 2 – Health and welfare

• Module 3 – General safety

• Module 4 – High-risk activities

• Module 5 – Environmental awareness

Topics include legal responsibilities, accident reporting, first aid and emergency procedures, PPE, asbestos, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, hazardous substances, manual handling, fire safety, plant and vehicles, lifting operations, working at height, excavations, confined spaces, electrical safety, work equipment, environmental awareness, pollution and waste management.

This is a 1 day course lasting 7.5 hours.

To be eligible for certification, delegates must attend the full duration of the course. The course is delivered in person at our training centre in Lincoln, with a comfortable and supportive learning environment.

Our open courses run with a maximum of 20 delegates, creating a relaxed, interactive setting where everyone gets involved.

Assessment

To successfully complete the course, delegates must pass both the trainer review and the end of course assessment. The trainer review considers engagement with the mandatory course exercises and overall engagement and participation. Delegates must pass the trainer review to be eligible to sit the end of course examination.

Examination

The end of course examination consists of 25 multiple choice questions. Each question is worth 1 mark. The pass mark is 80% (20 out of 25 marks). The examination lasts 30 minutes and must be completed under examination conditions. It is a closed-book examination.

If you pass the course, you’ll receive a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, which is valid for 5 years.

You’ll need this certificate, alongside the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, to apply for your CSCS Green Card.

To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the course before the expiry date.

Learners should have an operative level of English. You should be able to understand simple instructions, ask and answer basic questions, read common signs and safety words, and write short answers or tick boxes. Perfect English is not required; the trainer will explain new words and support learners throughout the course. If you have any learning difficulties, a disability or other support needs, please tell us before the course so that appropriate arrangements can be considered.

CITB Employer Network Funding

Allenby Training is an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) and part of the CITB Training Provider Network (TPN).

If applicable, we recommend the following process for CITB Employer Network referrals:

1. Reserve a place with us as an approved training provider.
2. Email your local CITB Advisor with the full booking details.
3. The CITB Advisor will submit the request to their booking team for approval.
4. CITB will confirm the booking directly.
5. Training will then proceed as normal.
