Looking to start a career in construction? The CITB Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) course is the perfect first step for anyone new to the industry. Whether you're a labourer or planning to work on site, this one day course gives you the essential knowledge you need to stay safe and work confidently.
It’s also the required training for those applying for the CSCS Labourer Green Card.
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal if you’re:
- About to start working in the construction or civil engineering industry
- A labourer who needs the CSCS Green Card
- Looking to refresh your basic health and safety knowledge
No previous experience is needed, but you should have a good understanding of spoken and written English.
What does the course cover?
We’ll take you through the essentials of health, safety, and environmental awareness on a construction site. Topics include:
- Legal responsibilities and site safety rules
- Identifying common hazards and how to avoid them
- Manual handling and working at height
- Fire prevention and emergency procedures
- Safe use of tools and equipment
- Occupational health risks, including dust, noise, and vibration
- The importance of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
- Site signage and procedures

Course Duration & Attendance
This is a 1 day course lasting 7.5 hours.
To be eligible for certification, delegates must attend the full duration of the course. The course is delivered in person at our training centre in Lincoln, with a comfortable and supportive learning environment.

How is the course assessed?
At the end of the course, you’ll complete a multiple choice assessment to check your understanding. Our trainer will support you throughout the session to ensure you’re well prepared.
What certification will I receive?
If you pass the course, you’ll receive a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate, which is valid for 5 years.
You’ll need this certificate, alongside the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, to apply for your CSCS Green Card.
A CSCS card can be ordered online www.cscs.uk.com/applying-for-cards/ or by telephoning CSCS on 0344 994 4777. Other scheme cards are also available.
To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the course before the expiry date.

Entry requirements
- Must be at least 16 years old
- Good understanding of spoken and written English
- You’ll need to bring valid ID (passport, driving licence or similar)
CITB Grant Information
We are a CITB Approved Training Organisation (ATO).
If your company is CITB registered, you may be eligible to claim a grant for each candidate who attends this course.
To process the grant:
- Simply provide your company’s CITB Levy number when booking.
- We’ll include it in the course paperwork and submit everything on your behalf after the course.
- The grant claim is handled automatically — no extra admin for you.
