By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

• Plan and prepare resources to direct excavating plant
• Position and demarcate safe working zones
• Guide plant machinery within the excavation area
• Assist in the excavation process including ground inspection and service exposure
• Comply with relevant health & safety legislation (HASWA, HSG47, HSG136, etc.)
• Demonstrate safe digging practices and hazard awareness

This course is suitable for individuals who:

• Work alongside excavator operations
• Are responsible for directing plant machinery in utility or construction environments
• Require certification to act as an Excavator Banksperson in line with EUSR standards

Learners must hold a valid accredited certificate or card from a nationally recognised awarding body for the safe use of cable avoidance tools (CAT & Genny).

Experienced Worker Route: Assessment only (no training)

Practical assessments include:

• Assessing the site, area, and machinery
• Establishing a safe working zone
• Using cable avoidance tools to identify and mark excavation areas
• Guiding the excavator over a 30m distance with directional control
• Observing excavation activity and halting operations for safety checks
• Assisting with hand digging or air lancing to expose services
• Supporting backfill operations and site reinstatement

Successful candidates will receive a Utility Excavator Banksperson EUSR registration.

Registration is valid for 3 years from the date of completion.
