Overview
Category 1: Locate Utility Services (HSG47) covers the minimum training and assessment required for those working to safely detect utility services using recognised and approved detection methods. The standard has been derived from the following National Occupational Standards:
- EUSMUNC06 Locate and Avoid Services for Utilities Network Construction
- EUSEPUS044 Location and Identification of Underground Utility Services in the Electricity Power Utilities
It also incorporates the relevant requirements of HSE guidance documents:
- HSG47 Avoiding Danger from Underground Services
- HSG150 Health and Safety in Construction
Achievement of the standard demonstrates effective performance, by being able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge:
- Interpret utility plan drawings and identify symbols and coded information
- Prepare and use location equipment to locate a range of underground services
- Identify the dangers and hazards associated with underground services
- Recognise why some services are more difficult to locate
- Carry out site marking using appropriate methods
EUSR Category 1: Locate Utility Services (HSG47)
This course provides essential training for individuals involved in excavation work, focusing on the safe detection and avoidance of underground utility services. It aligns with the Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR) standards and incorporates guidance from HSE documents such as HSG47 and HSG150.
Who Should Attend
Ideal for operatives, supervisors, and managers responsible for planning or conducting excavation activities where underground services may be present.
Entry Requirements
- Learners must have a basic understanding of site safety
- Suitable PPE must be worn during practical sessions
Course Content
- Interpretation of utility drawings and identification of symbols and coded information.
- Preparation and use of location equipment (e.g., CAT & Genny) to detect underground services.
- Recognition of hazards associated with underground utilities and understanding of safe excavation practices.
- Site marking techniques using appropriate methods.
- Awareness of the limitations of detection equipment and utility drawings.
Assessment
- Written questioning to confirm underpinning knowledge
- Practical assessments to demonstrate their competence in locating underground utilities safely.
Certification
Successful candidates will receive an EUSR registration valid for three years, confirming their ability to locate utility services safely.

Delivered at our Allenby Training Centre or on your site (on request and subject to suitability).
