The City & Guilds 6160-05 qualification is designed for supervisors responsible for overseeing teams working in confined spaces. It aligns with national occupational standards and is recognised across various industries to include utilities and construction.

1. Legal and Regulatory Framework

  • Understanding the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Duties of entrants, controllers, and managers under the Confined Spaces Approved Code of Practice (ACoP)
  • Application of Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and Permits to Work
  • Risk assessments and method statements
  • Emergency arrangements and rescue plans

2. Atmospheric Testing and Monitoring

  • Use of gas monitors and interpretation of readings
  • Understanding atmospheric hazards and control measures
  • Monitoring and managing atmospheric deterioration

3. Equipment and PPE

  • Selection and maintenance of safety equipment, including gas monitors, escape breathing apparatus (EBA), and full breathing apparatus (BA)
  • Fitting and use of harnesses and access equipment
  • Emergency escape equipment and procedures

4. Supervisory Duties and Responsibilities

  • Planning and allocating team activities
  • Controlling safe entry and exit procedures
  • Monitoring team adherence to procedures
  • Maintaining effective communication
  • Initiating and controlling emergency situations
  • Documentation and record-keeping

5. Health, Safety, and Environmental Considerations

  • Understanding hygiene, infection control, and contamination procedures
  • Managing environmental risks associated with confined space work
  • Implementing current best practices and legislative requirements

On successful completion candidates will be issued with City & Guilds Certification. The qualification is valid for 3 years.

Candidates must hold a valid Confined Space Qualification (e.g., 6160-02 or 6160-09)

The minimum entry requirement is a good understanding of spoken and written English.

Candidates medically fit to undertake the training.

CITB Employer Network Funding

Allenby Training is an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) and part of the CITB Training Provider Network (TPN).

If applicable, we recommend the following process for CITB Employer Network referrals:

  1. Reserve a place with us as an approved training provider.
  2. Email your local CITB Advisor with the full booking details.
  3. The CITB Advisor will submit the request to their booking team for approval.
  4. CITB will confirm the booking directly.
  5. Training will then proceed as normal.
