Our 1 day CABWI certified Cable Avoidance (CAT & Genny) course provides essential training in the location and avoidance of underground services. This course helps operatives and supervisors comply with health and safety regulations and avoid costly or dangerous mistakes on site.
Who Should Attend This CAT & Genny Training Course
This course is designed for:
- Construction operatives and supervisors
- Utilities and groundworks personnel
- Anyone responsible for excavation or digging near buried services
It is ideal for those who require NRSWA accreditation or who need to safely locate underground pipes, cables, and other apparatus.
What Does the Course Cover?
This training blends theory with practical learning and includes:
- How to safely use CAT & Genny equipment
- Reading and interpreting utility plans
- Identifying underground Gas, Water, Electricity and Telecom services
- Recognising signs of damaged and undamaged services
- Understanding the HSG47 guidance for safe digging
- Creating site plans to record located services
- Selecting and using the correct PPE
Course Duration & Attendance
1 Day CAT & Genny Course – Location & Timings
- Duration: 1 full day (8:30 AM – approx. 4:00 PM)
- Location: Allenby Training Services, 23 Crofton Road, Lincoln, LN3 4NL
- Learners must arrive 15 minutes early and bring valid photo ID (passport or driving licence).
PPE Requirements for Practical Training
All learners must bring and wear the following PPE:
- Class 3 high-visibility top and trousers
- Safety boots
- Hard hat
If you have your own CAT & Genny device, you are welcome to bring it for use during the practical session.
How is the course assessed?
Assessment includes:
- Multiple-choice questions
- Practical assessment
All assessments meet CABWI and HAUC(UK) national standards.
What certification will I receive?
On successful completion, delegates will be awarded:
- CABWI certificate
- A Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR) card, valid for five years
These qualifications are industry recognised and essential for employment in road and street works.
Progression
Follow On Training After Your Cable Avoidance Qualification:
This course forms part of the CABWI New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) suite of qualifications.
After completing this unit, learners may progress to:
- Full NRSWA Operative or Supervisor qualifications
- Excavation and reinstatement training
- Plant and utility safety courses
Entry Requirements
No formal qualifications are required. Delegates should:
- Have basic literacy and numeracy skills
- Be ready to participate in a combination of theory and hands-on training

If your company is CITB registered, you may be eligible to claim a grant for each candidate who attends this course.
