NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme)
NPORS training and testing is conducted in accordance with published course objectives and learning outcomes which are derived from the National Occupational Standards.
Employers, once they have assessed the suitability of a person for the role of plant operator will then decide which route their candidate should follow i.e. novice, operator, experienced operator requiring training or experienced operator requiring no training. An NPORS Accredited Training Provider (ATP) will complete a pre-assessment of the operator to determine the level of training required.

Operator Routes of Entry
Novice Training: Novice training is for those learners who have no or very limited experience in the activity or machine operation. Novice course durations may be reduced due to experience or reduced training objectives. Where this is the case it must be noted on the profile form.
Refresher Training: Undertaken when a certificate is to be renewed or previous training is to be updated and the employer feels the operator will benefit from remedial tuition. Operators must hold a previous certificate or have had previous training. In either case a copy of the previous certificate or record of training must be with the test paperwork. The Training Provider / Instructor is responsible for this and it will be checked at audit.
Conversion Training: Undertaken when an operator is converting from one machine type to another e.g. converting from Industrial Telescopic Handler (J5) to Rough Terrain Telescopic Handler (J3). The Operator must hold a certificate for the original category being converted from. The Training Provider / Instructor is responsible for this and it will be checked at audit.
Experienced Worker Testing (EWT): Undertaken when the operator has demonstrable experience and their employer feels they do not require remedial tuition. However, this is often the case for practical operation but not so for the underpinning knowledge. The theory element will require an element of tuition in most cases to afford the candidate every opportunity to succeed. We are happy for a brief update on the theory element to be delivered by the instructor on the day. We will also be producing theory revision paperwork soon for candidates undertaking the EWT route.
NPORS Operator Card
The NPORS Operator Card is a record of training/assessment an individual has undertaken to prove their ability to safely operate or drive an item of plant machinery or equipment. NPORS now offer NPORS/CSCS Red Trained Operator Card & Blue Competent Operator Cards as well as the traditional NPORS operator card.

NPORS Traditional Card
If you do not require the CSCS logo on your NPORS card, the option to apply for a Traditional NPORS card is still available. Once the operator has successfully completed training/testing, they will receive a 5-year Traditional NPORS card, which can be renewed. If the operator has passed the relevant Health Safety & Environment (HS&E) test within the last 2 years, their card can be endorsed with the HS&E logo.
NPORS/CSCS Red Trained Operator Card
CITB: Health, Safety and Environment Test (H&S Touchscreen) needs to be completed within the last 2 years to book in for a NPORS/CSCS card.
If you don’t have the relevant NVQ for the item of plant you’re testing on, you will be issued with an NPORS/CSCS Red Trained Operator card, this lasts for 2 years. This card is not renewable, you will need to complete the relevant NVQ within the timescale to update your card.

NPORS/CSCS Blue Competent Operator Card
CITB: Health, Safety and Environment Test (H&S Touchscreen) needs to be completed within the last 2 years to book in for a NPORS/CSCS card.
If you already have an NVQ in the relevant plant, you will be issued with an NPORS/CSCS Blue Competent Operator card, this lasts for 5 years & is renewable.
Validating An NPORS Operator Card
The categories on the reverse of the Operator Card can be validated by scanning in the QR code on the front of the card, using the online card checker or by contacting NPORS on 01606 351240.
